        You don't............that is if you are referring to the actual
shaft that the steering wheel is attached to.
     The steering column actually is the outer tube. This tube is attached
to the steering box with a clamp at the base.

       If you are referring to the steering shaft, it is internal with the
box. The worm is pressed on it and you must disassemble the box and
withdraw the steering sector to press the shaft out of the bottom.

    TM 9-2320-218-34 "Steering Gear, Body, and Chassis Components" has the
procedure for this.
