I know this may sound absurd, but I believe that CA is wrong in making you get a
CDL if you are using the truck for non-commerical purposes. (I know - logic does
not exist at the BMV)

All of those farmers that drive semis to the elevators - the vast majority of them
don't have CDLs - it isn't required for farm use. It's right in the CDL manual
that the feds put out. If your truck is truly being used for commerical hauling
and it is over 26K GVW (M35's aren't) then you will need to get a DOT number and
keep log books and get a CDL.

My M51 5 Ton dump has an official GVW of about 44K lbs and it is registered as a
historic vehicle in Indiana, plates are $35/year (per law they should be zero $ but
the BMV couldn't figure it all out). I could have also registered it as a farm
vehicle but the plates would of been higher in cost.
