Cougarjack is quite right in detailing the potential hazards of using
generic 'sand' when blasting. It is much safer and quicker to use a
commercial "blasting medium" such as Black Beauty - much harder - of
uniform grade - dry etc. A supplier can also advise you on which size to
use to achieve your goal.

One other reason to use a commercial blasting medium is that some sand
contains salt. When the sand is smacked into the metal by the pressure
of the air, salt residue penetrates into the pores of the metal and can
mess up the adhesion of primer and paint. After a while rust bubbles
form under the coating and the surface is eventually breached. Steel and
aluminum ships are never blasted with sand prior to painting for this
very reason.

Happy Refinishing!
