Hey "tank guys", instead of discussion read issue
number 70 November/December 98 Military Vehicles
Magazine about M-8 AGS ( Armored Gun System )The
author do mention the israeli's Merkava and the
brazilian's (si!!!)Osorio...read more, sleep less
gentlemans.
I saw few years ago a documenrary about new materials
and it's possibles uses in industry. They mentioned a
new combination of non-metalics with metalics
materials, one of them is a combination called CERMET
: acronym of ceramic and metals. It's made puting
together a brick of ceramic ( at red heat temp )and a
brick of a certain metal( at red heat temp too )under
big pressure. In theory the new resulting material have
the best caracteristic of both worlds: the heat
resistance of ceramic and the strengh and flexibility
of metals. The possible uses mentioned in the program
was the develop of 21 century' armor for military
vehicles.
P.D:the armor weared in the M1A1 and M1A2 was
developped by the british ( Vickers , i think)and the
M1 Abrahams MBT is NOT completely covered with this
material, just at front , the turret and some areas at
sides (i think). The material used in this tank is NON
RADIOACTIVE REDUCED URANIUM, the same use the A-10 in
his G.E. Vulcan's bullet...C'mon ,don't tell me you
guys don't know this bird was designed as a tank
hunter?
Regards: jose (still in Land Rover's hunting)
