If the hood number is still visible or can be found, the last four digits of
the serial number were commonly used as the hood number, at least on the Air
Force jeeps. Typically it was the year with a letter then the last four
digits, my M38A1 mentioned a day or so ago with the strata blue conversation
is 53K5421. Hope this may be of some help to you.
