Depending on where the vehicle was originally made, under what contract, what
facility did the factory rebuild, what replacement parts were ever ordered,
etc., makes a difference on what the wood is/was.

Generally, the wood was type classified as a hard wood (oak, red wood, etc.).
Different rebuild contracts produced different things.

For instance, during the Vietnam war, the Army put a contract out to rebuild
2 1/2 T and 5 T trucks to Taiwan. Specs were written a little "loose" as
they say. We got back trucks with 1 ply tires! Seriously. The "canvas" was
similar cheapness, as was everything else.

The replacement slats that you could order during the 70"s and 80's were of
different types of wood, but all were pressure treated to create a very hard
wood. Tough to drill through.

If anyone wants to make the slats on the cheap (although you will go through
lots of saw blades), the wood that forms the front shield on the M113 family
of vehicles is the same wood, treated the same, only in big sheets. You can
find lots of these at DRMO, slightly damaged. Just measure and cut.

Of course it is pressure treated wood, so wear a mask when cutting!
