There is an interlock in the shift housing of the Model 18 transfer case. It is between the high/low and 2wd/4wd shift rails. I removed it in my MB for parades. Just remember that it was there because the torque is doubled in low range and you can easily break something if you whoop on it in 2wd low. I removed mine on the bench, since I was rebuilding the T-case anyway. I seem to remember that the M38A1 has a large removeable cover over the trans. and T-case that may allow you to do this without removing the T-case. Detailed rebuild instructions are at http://www.nvcs.com/bstanley/shaft.htm

Good Luck
