Hello all,

For all of you master mechanics out there...

I am finally getting my 42 GPW back together. Wiring mostly complete, engine
accessories connected, etc.

Problem: cranks fine, but does not start.

I did not dismantle the engine other than to replace gaskets. I did not
remove cam, timing chain, crank, pistons or valves. The engine ran before I
began taking the jeep apart. I can't say it started easily however. I
rebuilt the fuel pump and carb (more on the carb later)

When re-installing the fly wheel, I made sure the timing mark was at TDC by
attaching compression tester to #1 cyl. and turning the engine forward
(pushed vehicle fwd in 1st gear, low range) until 1) the cyl pressure
increased, 2) rotor turned to lower forward position. I have since rechecked
this - twice.

I have voltage to coil, good spark (zapped me pretty severely) and good
compression. Compression is an even 90 psi at each cylinder with no leakdown
and takes about 4 cranks to get the comp tester to read the 90 psi.

I have set the timing per my manual instructions for no timing light (points
are just opening at TDC). The points were replaced and set to .020 gap.
Plugs are new and set to .030 gap.

The carb may be my problem as it seems to be allowing fuel to leak into the
intake after cranking. I have dismantled the carb three times now and
checked and rechecked the settings of the float (3/8" from housing) and high
speed needle (HS needle does bottom out in seat with throttle closed and has
the proper travel) and the idle A/F mixture screw has been set to 1 1/2
turns from the seat. There is no dirt or debris that I can see in the carb
float needle. It still after sustained cranking seem to spill over a good
bit of fuel into the intake and out of the carb housing. I plan to replace
my carb with a "professionally rebuilt" one (vendor sources/suggestions
welcome).

The engine cranks and cranks and may occasionally spit out the carb or out
of the tail pipe, but never seems to catch.

PLease offer some suggestions upon what I need to do to get this thing
running.

Thank you all very much!!
