I took my GPW to one of those informal car shows where everyone just comes
by and parks for a while. Lots of nice cars. I got ALOT of interest and it
made all my work worthwhile. There was one guy though.... He and his 7-8 yr
old son with him. This guy had his Corvette jacket and ball cap on and his
kid was absolutely going apeshit over the jeep. "Daddy! I love this, this is
really neat! Can we get one? This is cooler than your car!" Well the guy
didn't like that... he didn't like his kid, who probably has seen Corvettes
every day of his life, saying he liked something else better than HIS car.
So I'm just standing there talking quietly to another guy, not really
looking like the jeep is mine, and I hear the guy tell his son, "Thats just
a piece of crap old jeep". Now this is the kind of guy who probably hasn't a
clue about getting his hands dirty... likely paid someone to do the resto
work, or bought the car show ready. You can just tell. I'm not mad or
anything, mostly I just feel sorry for the guy, cause he's missing out on
the good part about playing with old cars. So I don't say anything until the
kid starts asking questions "is it 4wd? how fast does it go? where are the
seat belts? is THAT the gas tank?!" and the dad doesn't have a clue. So I
spark up with the answers and the guy realizes he said something stupid in
front of the owner and has one foot in his mouth and one up his butt, so his
attitude changes. The first thing I say is that "Well, its not a Corvette,
and doesn't go as fast, but I'll bet the ride is actually a little better".

Bob Kelly

***** As usual, if you grow up with something, you take it for granted. My
son was more interested in the 1960s muscle cars than in my jeep! Oh well.
