All,

Getting ready to take delivery of 2 CCKW trucks, one dump truck (352) and
one as a 5th wheel (353). Ya, I'm excited! I drove the dump truck about 25
years ago when working for the family construction business, it was rough
looking even then but has been sitting since '77. We are going to be
restoring the dump truck to its original non-military condition, used in 4th
of July parades, etc. The 5th wheel setup has not run in over 40 years, in
fact I've never seen it run. It was mothballed when I first saw it in 74.
We are hoping to use it as a materials hauler out in the hills and backroads
of the Sierra's.

I'm considering converting the 353 to a newer V-8 setup (327 or 350) with a
newer matching tranny (th400 or t-10) since the engine will need some
extensive work before being able to be used - but I have a few concerns,
they go as follows:

Has anybody done this swap?

Since the original motor put out about 100 hp and the drivetrain was
designed to handle that type of load does the V8's power pose a breakdown
threat in the drive train? The truck will be used on the freeway and I
don't want to use the 270 until its rebuilt and then put back in when the
truck is used sparingly at freeway speeds or gets retired.

Is there room in the front compartment for a V8?

Is there room for the correctly sized new radiator?

Does the overall length of the V8/th400 setup leave enough room? (its got
to be longer than the 270+tranny setup...)

Do the motor mounts pose a problem to design?

I ran across pictures of a DUKW with a v8
(http://my.voyager.net/dukw/dukw350.htm) but there was not much info on how
they went about it, but it gives hope that it can be successfully done.

Any help or suggestions much apprectiated
