Gene, The USMC mules I've had or seen come two ways: OD paint with yellow
stencils on sides that give USMC and vehicle No., with a diamond lying on
its side (usually black outline or black outline with white center) with a
number inside. Nobody has ever been able to tell what this number is. I have
one that says 820, another with something like 1022, etc. This diamond is
painted on the fuel tank and on the canvas of drivers seat back. If you
want pictures of these let me know.
The next USMC is woodland camo with USMC and vehicle No. painted in
black on sides. Under the steering brace to the rear of the data plates is
painted in black letters 1 in. tall " MAX SPEED 20 MPH"
The only thing I've ever seen on USMC fuel tanks is the diamond and
number inside. I have a couple that came from the Army that have a 4" tall
black star on the left end of the fuel tank (facing the tank from side) and
the words: " FILL 4.5 IN. FROM TOP"
I'm not aware of any other markings other that those. I'm sure there may
be others, I'd like to hear what they are. One of mine from the Army had a
faint marking near the steering access cover, but couldn't figure out what
it said. The Army also put tire pressure marks on the side of the bed over
or near wheels "TP 12". And of course, the Army painted U.S.ARMY and Vehicle
reg. No. on the sides.
Let me know if you learn about any other markings.
    Hope this helps, Keith Byrd
