M416 holes

All the recent discussion of M416s has prompted me to re-evaluate mine,
leading to a question. Mine was acquired from a fellow who bought it at a
Gov't sale in Topeka, KS. It was twisted (the frame remains bent), mashed,
and full of purposely drilled holes. It is about this last characteristic
that i wish to inquire.

On each side panel and both ends, a number of holes, approx 3/8", were
drilled. The pattern is irregular, but there is a pattern. Some of the
holes are pair vertically with another (about 1' - 1 1/2" apart); most have
at least one (or a pair) at the same height above the bed floor.

Does anyone have any idea what these holes are for? Mounted equipment?
Bored motor pool?

TIA,

Steve Allen
