Here's a picture of one in use (from a collection of wartime photos I
acquired at a gun and militaria show in the US).

CAPTION: Germany, April 1945- Picture of the Rhine River and bridge that the
Army is building, or should I say, repairing.

The entire page showing this gentleman's wartime experiences (via his photos
and ephemera) is here:

Subject: [MV] CDL Vehicles ??? Fact or Fantasy ?

Hi list

I was talking to a WW2 Veteran of the Staffordshire Regiment yesterday and
he described a system they trained with and took to Germany at the end of
WW2, however it never saw service.

He called it a CDL Vehicle - CDL standing for "Canal Defence Light" or
"Continous Day Light", he said the lights were designed to (1) temporarily
Blind anyone who looked at them, and (2) If two beams were shone together at
the same point, the area in the middle was lit up like day time. A battery
of light units flashing different colours at different rates could give the
impression the lights were coming from different distances away from the
enemy, making it impossible to work out the range.

Does anyone know what he's talking about - is this true... or has he been
watching that 2001 Space film too much ?

Cheers

Tim
