Have you checked the fuel lines themselves? Newer gas likes to eat
the rubber lines from the inside out and presents itself as the symptoms you
describe.
Had similar trouble with an MB running rough and hot and stalling
which degenerated to not wanting to run at all. Appeared as no fuel so we
tried carb, filter, tank, pump and then moved to ignition just for good
measure, rebuilt distributor (needed it anyway) etc. for the rough running
part. Tried again (now 3 mechanics including us involved and scratching our
heads) and nothing changed. Mechanic #4 steps in and jury rigs a fuel line
from the filter to pump with copper tube and NEW rubber fuel line (all
others are hard lines inthe system). Started first time and running fine and
cool ever since now that it's not starving for gas. Disection of old line
revealed the rubber was gooey inside and let enough fuel through to idle
(barely - sometimes) but closed tight when throttle was opened wider. Word
of caution - if the line is "melting" inside and you replace them, clean the
carb small passages as some of the goo will find it's way to those places
for sure.

Hope this helps,
