Haven't seen the mag / photo in question, but I can say that if there isn't a
flag pole/standard shown then there is no way to know if the flag is upside
down.
If the upper red diagonal next to the flagpole is in the lower half of it's
white diagonal (I think that reads ok!) then the flag is the right way up.
