Re: [MV] "Red" Diesel, Howard?

The color Red was added to non-highway #2 fuels when the EPA mandated
reduced sulfur in Diesel Fuel If I remember right in late 92 early 93. I was
driving an 18 over the road at the time and on one trip counted over 400
trucks broke down by the side of the road on I-80 when westbound!! The new
fuel didn't have any pour protection at all and I thanked my lucky stars my
truck had a ArticFox fuel heater in the right side tank. Prior to the low
sulfur fuel going into service Diesel was either Red, Green or Bluish
depending on the brand. The Feds mandated all off road Diesel had to be dyed
Red for easy ID at DOT checks. So called Red fuel nowadays is also the same
stuff you have in your fuel tank at home if you heat with oil, also dyed
RED, and it's essentially the old Diesel fuel for highway use and is still
has all the sulfur it ever did.
Lets see now, Railroad, construction, Military, stationary Diesel power
plants still use the "old" fuel. By the way Gents when I last talked with
active duty U.S. ARMY troops they told me the military eliminated Diesel
fuel in favor of JP-8 which is dyed RED also and the big advantage with it
is it will pour out of todays plastic Gerry cans at 40 below F. with no
problem or additives. AKA no more (theoretically) gelled fuel filters or
lines/tanks.

As Joe Young pointed out you can run it on the road UNTILL YOU GET
CAUGHT!!! Believe me, you dodn't want to know what the costs are when that
happens. Stay with road fuel as it is called by truckers "DOT ANTIFREEZE"
(it's got a shade of light green in it hence the name).

Note: After the horrendous breakdowns experienced with the introduction
of low sulfur Diesel fuel they reformulated it to flow better in cold
weather and I haven't had any problems with it in my truck without a fuel
heater.

My apologies at being long winded on the keyboard.
