Mark,
You answered Mike with:
>>mileage significantly different? Your truck gets great mileage for a
truck of its type, but how do you know that it's because you used
Mobil Delvac 15W40, rather than any particular brand of SAE 30 (or
whatever other grade is recommended for your weather conditions)? I'd
bet a dollar that the overall difference in energy losses due to
engine friction with different oils is very small compared to the
energy losses due to rolling friction and wind resistance;<<

Let me add that no, I have not conducted unnecessary high tech tests.
I was a Mobil Distributor from 1957-91 and know their products. I don't
think Mike was trying to make a comparison, it was more like giving
a heads up on the product. A minimal difference between brands is
of little significance. What is, is the fact Mobil Delvac, also available in
synthetic form as Mobil Delvac 1, gives great service. In fact, since
I sold out the distributorship and went full time mil-vehicles, I do not
have easy access to the Mobil products. I used to have tractor-
trailer loads brought in, but now I just run down to the Gulf distributor
and get their Series 3, 15W-40 oil. It works, but I'd rather be using
Mobil even though it costs me twice as much.
I could go on and on about the benefits I receive using Mobil 1, in most
of my vehicles, including my late model Harleys, but I'm not prepared,
nor do I want, to back up my findings with comparisons to other brands/
synthetics. I do not recommend going to the high cost of synthetics in
a multifuel. For the mileage we hobbyists incur, it's not practical.
Back in my drag racing days, I tried out a so called "super, high
performance racing oil." Ha, seized the engine going through the traps!
I went back to Mobil's non-detergent, low priced 30W and started winning
trophies, again.
I'd like to mention that I live fairly close to Mobil Oil Corporation's
Research
and Development lab. Rows of engines on stands going full blast! Quite
a sight (and sound).
Well, I might have to slug down a few rounds of whatever oil
I have out in the shop just to free-up my ego enlarged head!
Darn, guys, thanks for all of the compliments.
Joe "MV Trucker" Young
