I think Andreas means that this is a pollution control device found only on
the later M151A2s.....

The other reason is, that there is a canister filled with active charcoal,
which takes the fumes (vapour) from the fuel tank and the carburettor,
when the engine is not running but still hot. The air goes through the
charcoal, but the hydrocarbons "stick" at the charcoal. When the engine
starts again, it sucks air back though the canister and takes the
hydrocarbons back. So it cleans the active charcoal.
