For backpackers, outdoorsmen, and the like, noise discipline is never a factor.
In fact, you WANT to be as loud and as visual as you can be.

When you're twenty miles into indian country, as part of a recon patrol or, even
better, a sniper team, noise equals detection, and detection equals death.

Gore Tex is good back in the rear areas, but on patrol you want clothing made of
natural fibers, so that you don't make any noise.

I, too, would prefer noise over hypothermia, but as a heavy machinegunner, I
wasn't required to be subtle... *evil grin*
