Howdy,
I know of a few wheelwrights - one in Jacksonville Fla and one in Middle
Georgia and one in Kentucky. If these would be convenient, I can get their
names & numbers from my wife.
The wheelwright iin Middle Georgia, Welliver's (sp?), has replicated a
federal supply wagon from the Civil War. It's a government contract wagon that
was used by the 1st Division of the 20th Corp during the March to the Sea. The
original is in the Atlanta History Center. The replica is now at Pamplin Park,
Virginia. I've heard that Welliver's is good quality, but sometimes quite a
wait.
The wheelwright in Jacksonville had done repairs to one of my wagon wheels
before I purchased the wagon. It is a good repair & other than +100 year newer
paint looks to be an perfect repair. Also, the previous owner said the wheel
was repaired fairly quickly.
The wheelwright in Kentucky is Bluegrass Carriage Works (I'm 99% sure of the
name) They're located near Pleasant Hill, Ky. (Shaker Village) I've seen some
of their restorations & their stuff is simply amazing. They do everything from
Meadowbrooks to 1820's hay carts to farm wagons, to stagecoaches. I'm pretty
sure they've done the restorations for much of Shaker Village's collection so
they may be a good reference.
