Some DJ's (postal type jeep) in left hand drive, 2wd, automatic were put
into military service. I have seen one ex-Air Force version. >>

Dear Listers........

just a bit of historical information (very kindly sent to me by another mutt
fanatic) not too long ago.
When the design study was undertaken for the development of the M151, back in
the early '50s, Ford was asked to consider an auto transmission for inclusion
in the mutt. A transmission was designed which would have given satisfactory
performance, although it added 40lbs to the weight of the vehicle.
When the report of the design study was produced, however, the "Conclusions"
section said... "the simplest type of automatic transmission.......... can
hardly be justified in a 1/4-ton 4x4 vehicle, because of the added cost,
weight and servicing".

Hope this is of interest............ and talking of years gone by..... I
just heard on CNN that lawyers acting for the "Dewey-for-President" campaign
have asked for a recount........lawyers acting for Harry S. have lodged an
injunction. (:

Kind regards from the land of castles and cucumber sandwiches.

Ken
