Anyway, its tin (soft solder) rather than lead you'll be using, and yes,
the coating of tin will protect the steelplate from corrosion.

Process has been used for nearly two hundred years in the making of aptly
named "tins" for the preservation of food (Appert, Nicolas, 1749-1841)

Of course you have to apply it to bare metal; but then it will hold
very well, and will not crack away like plastic fillers.

Tin-solder filling has been the mark of high quality bespoke
coach-building up to the second world-war, and was still used after the war
for some haut-de-gamme models.
