Sounds like the teeth are gone from the flexplate..they are cheap...about
$35..
DO NOT REMOVE TRANSMISSION TO REPLACE....!!! Just remove all the bolts from
the bellhousing and transmission/transfer case mounts...unbolt the
transmission filler tube at the top...have 2 6 or 8 inch long bolts to
install in place of two bellhousing retaining bolts....(I leave the starter
in place)..oh...unhook batteries before doing anything !!) Depends on the
rear drive shaft whether or not you have to unbolt it from the
differential...same with the front...some vehicles are forgiving -- some are
not --play it by ear....if the trans will slide back without unbolting the
drive shafts..go for it !
Now after removing flywheel inspection cover..unbolt the 6 bolts from the
torque converter-----slide the whole transmission/transfer back far enough
to get a 6" piece of 2X4 in the opening with the 4" width...now you can
unbolt the flexplate and install a new one..! Should take less than an hour.
If it is not the flex plate....low batteries will cause the starter to make
horrific noises...and still start the vehicle...sometimes ! Good luck, Gene
