Is there not a ground in the wire bundle connected in the screw-on
connection?

I'm not sure about the problems being related but intermittent turn signal
problems can be caused by a weak ground between the turn signal lever and
the
steering column. Loosen the hose clamp holding it on and scrape some of the
paint off the column under the spot where the lever mounts. There are four
sharp feet the lever sits on. Make sure there's a good connection there.
