Chase ends on Sutton fairway

SUTTON-- A Sutton man was arrested yesterday in the theft of an Army National
Guard truck that was pursued by police on a chase that ended on a fairway of
Pleasant Valley Country Club in Sutton.
Eldon J. Colonies, 24, of Sutton is scheduled to be arraigned today
in Uxbridge District Court, state police said.
He was charged with assault with intent to murder, assault with a
dangerous weapon, malicious destruction of property, assault and battery on a
police officer, use without authority, refusal to stop, driving so as to
endanger, resisting arrest and driving under the influence of alcohol.
The five-ton truck was stolen from the 1st Battalion, 181st
Infantry, Massachusetts Army National Guard at 701 Lincoln St. in Worcester,
state police said.
The incident was reported to the Grafton State Police barracks by
Sutton police at 4:25 a.m.
The truck traveled through Worcester, Sutton, Millbury and
Shrewsbury. It was pursued by Trooper Adam Crook of the Grafton State Police
barracks and by local police from Worcester, Sutton, Millbury and Shrewsbury,
state police said.
In an effort to stop the truck, police used stop sticks several
times, state police said. Stop sticks have spikes to puncture tires.
Each time the stop sticks were used, the driver of the stolen truck
swerved to avoid them and aimed the vehicle at the police cruisers or at
other lanes of traffic, state police said.
The chase went along routes 146 and 20 and on back roads, state
police said.
The pursuit ended at the golf course after 5 a.m., when the driver
shut off the truck's lights and crashed through the west gate of the course,
state police said.
Mr. Colonies was taken into custody at the golf course, state police
said. He was held overnight at the Grafton State Police barracks.
The truck was returned to Lt. Col David Cunha of the Army National
Guard and was locked up at a National Guard garage in Whitinsville.
It was not known if the truck was damaged.
No one was injured in the incident, which is being investigated by
state police.
