I have the engine out of my M20... I will check the size of the plug
tomorrow. The 1945 ORD 9 lists one 1-1/2 inch plug and nine 1-1/4 inch
plugs. I would use the "rubber expansion plug" only as a temporary repair.
They will eventually fail.
As for the JXC engine offered to you... good price, wrong engine. The M8
and M20 use the Hercules JXD engine. The JXC is 282 cubic inches, the JXD is
320 cubic inches. The cylinder bore is different. Other features may also
be.
