After reading about , and agreeing , with the placement of gears within the
transmission , seating comfort for the unofficial 3rd man was something I
had not thought of.
I would now like to offer another possible , but incorrect , view. When the
truck is equipped with the machine gun ring , you would not want the gunner
to accidentally kick the truck out of gear when arriving or departing with guns
ablazing.
Note that this shift pattern is also used in the diesel 5 ton series such as the
M54 and the M813.
