runaways

Gentlemen, Ladies: Being new to diesel engines and LDT-465-1Ds in
particular, what does a runaway is?, what causes it?, what can be done to
prevent it?. My M35 runs good but when I got it the mushroom air cleaner
cover was under the seat. Any reason why
