Cool down time is required of all engines by manufacturer suggested
operating practice whether air or water cooled. It prevents hot spots from
forming inside the engine if you let them idle for 3 minutes then shut them
down. Three minutes is the factory specification for proper cool down time
for a turbo or non-turbo engine whether gas or Diesel. Most professional
drivers use five minutes as a safety factor. While your engine is idling is
when you get out and check all your lights and kick the tires as well as
write up any defects found with the vehicle. This is after just coming off
the road where the engine has been working. Hot spots inside the water
jacket on engines can and will boil the coolant well above the boiling point
even under pressure, remember under pressure the boiling point rises. When
coolant boils the coolant is no longer in contact with the steel wall of the
water jacket so cracks can form in some cases.
