Filling with water is the "norm"...
you fill in such a way as to "NOT" have water just under where you are
"SOLDERING"..not welding as everyone here is saying. Gas tanks should be
soldered..not welded.
I have repaired a few since the early 50's. A penny is "fluxed" --- the
tank is cleaned and steel wooled at the leak..the area is then fluxed and
the penny is soldered over the leak. This is the "real" way to do it.!! And
just as safe as it could ever be. The trick is to get the tank nice and
"dry" after soldering...carry on..Gene
