Why not just use 12v halogens and run them in series? That would be $7-US
apiece. Sure, if a bulb failed you would have to switch to the 'other
beam' immediately, and then pull over and replace. But you always carry
spares, right? And, yes, you would have to adapt today's socket into the
original housing being sure to get the focal point just right.
