I've heard that a way to get un-stuck was to bolt a wheel on the outside of
the front wheel (with tire mounted) and then use the rim as a spool for a
makeshift winch.

Pretty, no.
Dangerous, yes.
Sometimes resulting in a bigger mess than getting stuck, absolutely.
