Dear Bill,

this is a well-known problem. When I was at the MV event at Poland in
1999,
a LEOPARD MBT towed a Polish T55 MBT out of a mud pit. The T55 sat
with its belly on the mud, the tracks rotating. They used a 1 1/2" steel
cable and you can be sure, that there was really tension on the cable.

Ask where the spectators were? Not more than 3 metres away from the
cable and the tanks.

If you want, have a look at:

http://www.kettenkrad.de/poland.htm#recovery

There you'll find a picture of the two tanks after the recovery.

Really. Have you ever heard a platoon of LEOPARD II MBTs (1500 bhp
Diesel each)
accelerating full throttle on the road in front of your house? That's
the
sound we like!

Best regards from Germany (home of the Diesel)
Andreas
