Hello from SouthEast China:

The 1983 Ford LTD is equiped with an Electronic Ingnition System. The
Dura-Spark II to be precise.

The ingnition Module tells the coil when to fire and thusly gives fire tot
he plugs that cause the internal combustion cycle to begin.

The Dura-Spark II ignition Module is equiped with a "Start" Circuit and a
"Run" Circuit.

As a Ford Line Tech I have seen many times what you describe happening. With
the Vehicle in question starting when you release the key. Sufficiant fuel
charge in in the cylinders to cause the vehicle to start when a spark jumps
at the right time as you release the key.

Check to see if your ingnition module has a two or three plug connector and
replace it with a know good one. This should solve your problem. The module
is usally about five inches square and mounted on an inner fender.

Let me know what happens.
