CUCV Fuel Filter Leaks

A leaking fuel filter can be a very annoying problem not to mention a dirty
one, esp. when it won't stay fixed. If the leak is in that area, it will
only be a bad filter and/or bad grommets or something has happened to the
filter base casting. Unless water is drained periodically from the base, it
can potentially freeze where it is trapped (wintertime) and cause the cast
aluminum base to "deform" much like a copper pipe that freezes. The first
freeze may not rupture it but subsequent freezes will bring it to that
point. Front Line Surplus has just the cast aluminum base by itself with
nipples and by using a new filter and this base, should cure your leak
problem. Through some form of deformation of this casting, the nipples that
go inside the filter can actually "move" and this misalignment can cause the
assembly to leak. If someone at some point removed the filter wrong,
(yanking on it to free a stubborn one) they could have bent or misaligned
these nipples. It is also very possible for the aluminum casting to deform
through a bad casting and show itself many years later. It would be worth
it to have the new base to build your old one (reusing the sensors and drain
port) and installing a new filter. If this is not possible, folks like NAPA
and truck shops should have aftermarket filter assemblies that will replace
the whole filter assembly. Stu Ellis has contributed a goodie piece of info
that diesel shops should have kits to repair this assembly if it isn't
cracked. (Stanadyne 80) It is a fun and rewarding job to overhaul that
assembly! Julian Burke
