CHEVY FRONT HUB REMOVAL

Has anyone run into a problem removing the inner drive
gear on a CUCV/SUBURBAN/BLAZER front manual locking
hub? If so, what's the trick?

On the truck in question, the internal axleshaft snap
ring (the one right at the end of the drive axle) has
been removed and the inner drive gear should slide
right off the axle splines but will not move past the
snap ring grove. The clutch ring and spring have
alreay been removed at this point.

In that this is a high mileage truck I'm wondering if
the inner drive gear, via the snap ring, has pounded
the back sides of the axle splines right at the tip of
the axle just enough to keep the gear from sliding
off.
