List,

Thanks for all the responses on the carb, paint and MG's It appears
the "Correct MG" is the M60 or .50 cal. Apparently the .30 cal was
being phased out of the US Inventory at this point for compatibility
with the NATO 7.62 Ammo. .30 Cals are correct if you were building an
ARVN jeep since they were one of the recipients of the brownings.

The correct paint colors are 34052 (USMC) and 24052 (ARMY) Gillespie
has both and can be obtained from RAPCO

Carb status. Most replies pointed me to lack of fuel. This was a
correct diagnosis. The engine is definitely not getting fuel for
starting. I had 2 Take Out carbs laying around the garage so swapped
one in and the jeep fired right up but would not idle. After reading
the -34 and getting a better understanding of the Zenith Carb, I learned
that there are several "modes" to this carb I don't have the manual
handy at the moment but I believe they are idle, power, and
acceleration. With lots of little tunnels inside the carb body to
facilitate these modes. My guess is that my Take out carb is blocked in
the idle passage which might explain why it fires up but wont idle. But
what about my original carb, remember it seemed to fun fine after push
starting the vehicle? My theory here is that the engine is producing
enough vacuum while running that it is sucking fuel through the other
passages. So what is wrong? I did read in the -34 that you shouldn't
use Carb Cleaner on these carbs since it will eat out the seals on the
accelerator linkage shaft. As I recall my problems did start shortly
after rebuilding the carb and soaking it with carb cleaner. Could this
have deteriorated my shaft seals and cause a vacuum leak big enough to
not get the fuel through the carb?

So now what to do? I have 3 carbs. One I haven't tried, One won't
idle, One won't start.

Option 1: Try the untested carb

Option 2: Clean and rebuild the no idle carb with the jets and float
etc from my won't start carb

Option 3: Clean and rebuild the no idle carb with a new rebuild kit

Option 4: Buy a new carb (Are the Holley and Zenith interchangeable? I
seem to remember hearing the holley was better, And who has them?)

Any suggestions? And if I do Option 2 or 3 what should I clean the carb
with? The manual says solvent, what is safe so that I don't ruin more
seals? One other quick question. My 2 Take Out carbs both had a
fitting on top of where the fuel filter screen goes. One even had a
hose off of it. This is on top not the side one where the fuel comes
in. My original carb just had a plug with the fuel screen attached.
The -34 does not show another hose/fitting there where did this go?

Thanks for all the help guys,
Tony
