CUCV starter

Hi,
The starter on my 84' Blazer started to turn slow, so
I took it off and brought it to a well known 80 year
old man who has rebuilt starters from the beginning
and had it rebuilt. When I put it back on, I did it
the exact way in opposite that it came off, it had one
big fat shim on it, so I put it back on. Anyways, I
drove it as a daily driver for about 2 weeks before it
started to squeal. It would squeal only about once
every other week before it got worse. Eventually it
did it all the time I couldn't even start it. I took
it back off and brought it back to the shop along with
the shim and he put on his coke-bottle glasses and
examined the drive gear. The gear was stripped only
on the end of the teeth, meaning that it had an
unnessessary shim on it. He told me that GM has been
known for poor starter alignment, and has cost them
and the consumer a lot of money replacing flywheels
and other related items. My starter might be factory
shimmed or might have had some idiot in the military
stick one in. The moral is, if you keep having
starter problems, check the wear on the drive gear to
make sure it is seating properly.
