The best way to find the gage of the original metal is to use a micrometer to measure the thickness and then divide that number into 1". For instance if the
metal was .045 then that would correspond to about 22 gage sheetmetal. I would use cold rolled low carbon sheet steel of whatever gauge was close.
Keep in mind that a bit heavier is probably better than lighter.
