Steve, I am going to guess (without seeing the pictures) that they are of
a special Luftwaffe unit which flew captured Allied aircraft. IIRC they
did mark them with their own national markings, but can't remember the
details. One of the lesser known formations of the war because it was
small and highly secret. Plus, most of the German records kept in
central archives were destroyed during a bombing raid at the very end of
the war, so many things which were documented were lost forever.
