Siping has been known to increase traction dramatically on wet roads and ice and snow. The tread bocks tend to squirm more which can increase treadwear
however. So it's a trade off. Look at all of the new "advanced" snow tires. They all utilize siped type treads, Michelin has one that is extremely siped.
Suposidly is it incredibly good on ice.
