After a couple of combat tours with the Marines in Vietnam, Ermey moved to
Manila and did bit parts in Phillipino movies. His first US movie was as
drill Sgt Loyce in "The Boys in Company C", 1978. I've always heard that he
was called in as a technical advisor for the film's DI, but played the role
so well, was himself given the job by director Sydney Furie.
His next role was uncredited as a Chopper Pilot with Robert Duvall's Air Cav
outfit in Francis Ford Coppola's "Apocolypse Now", 1978.
Director Furie liked Ermey so much, he used him again in "Purple Hearts" in
1984 and the rest is Hollywood history as they say.
