That would be a lot simpler, but then you would be relying upon the generator to supply the power to begin with again, plus you would be dumping half the
power input to the spare battery to heat. That's why the 24 to 12 volt inverter circuitry is so attractive, there is not a 50% loss in power going to 12 volts.

I'd like to make some changes to the ignition system of my M51, get rid of the points setup by putting in a Pertronics ignition kit. I'd also like to experiment
with putting an MSD ignition system on the truck or adapt a 6 cylinder GM HEI unit to the engine. The existing ignition is a little weak, especially during
startup. But all of this requires a rock solid reliable 12 volt source of power. Hence the GM 12 volt alternator idea. I don't know if a 24 to 12 volt converter
would be sufficiently reliable. I don't want to have my truck die in the middle of a gravel pit with 10 tons of rock in the bed.
