Hi All...

I just received this bogus message:

>
>List messages sent to your address <oconnor01@snet.net> have bounced.
>If you are reading this message, your mail system has probably been fixed.
>
>To clear the bounce counter and to prevent automatic cancellation of
> your subscription, use the Reply command in your mailer.
>
>Check that the Subject of the reply message contains
> the confirmation ID: 0520819944,
> and the reply is directed to <mil-veh-subscribe@mil-veh.org>,
> and the 'From' address of your reply is <oconnor01@snet.net>.
>
>All requests about this mailing list
> should be sent to <ack@mil-veh.org>

There was an attachment in the message which was "BAG.SCR" file, a
screen saver. Screen savers can do anything that a full program can
do, including kindly format your hard disk for you. I don't know what
the attached screen saver actually does, but DO NOT RUN THE ATTACHMENT
unless you're feeling adventurous!

The message was either a virus acting from the sender's mail program
(the apparent sender was "Dennis O'Connor" <oconnor01@snet.net> but
this might have been spoofed...Dennis should still run the latest
virus scanning software to make sure), or a malicious attempt by
someone else to damage subscribers' computers.

The message was NOT sent by the official mil-veh.org server, which is
in San Francisco on the Earthlink network. The message came from
someone in or near New York City from someone who uses SBC as their
ISP (snet.net). I am CC'ing this message to the system admin at
Southwestern Bell so hopefully they'll track down the sender and kill
their account if it was malicious.
