starting dormant MV's

One thing has been omitted from this discussion......

Oil is probably the cheapest thing in MV maintenance.

BEFORE you turn the motor over, much less start it, change the oil.

Many times vehicles that have been sitting for a while look like they have fresh clean oil in them. In reality, they have sat so long any impurities have settled to the bottom (the dipstick doesn't reach to the BOTTOM of the oil pan). If you turn the motor up, or start it, you just circulate all this crud, and moisture.

Drain the oil...then run a couple quarts more through to flush it out (some folks will recommend kerosene or diesel for this step), reinstall the drain plug, refill with the proper amount of oil, THEN try to turn over........

If the motor is stuck...how much could you have POSSIBLY lost by doing this...the cost of the oil 6-22 bucks depending on oil and engine...in any event, an inconsequential amount compared to the cost of operation of the engine over the life of your vehicle ownership.

My .02,
David Doyle
