The length of the gun tube is the caliber of a heavy weapon in multiples of diameter. That is, a 5.5 inch 50 caliber gun is 50x5.5inches long, or 275 inches. I do not know at what size this begins, but I do know that weapons as small as 37mm tank gun have their lengths measured in this way.
