Well, I see that it's obvious that WGB isn't a member of MVPA and it is
time for my "wash and wear" answer forum again for same questions asked
about every six weeks!!

WGB, Just look on Ebay! And while you're at it, join the MVPA.

Humvee's are NOT sold complete to anyone from the Gov't. except to
another government entity who would have reason to have one. Don't let
anyone fool you here. However this is not to say it hasn't happened as a
few have gotten out most likely through Forestry departments who don't know
the procedures in place for this topic. At one time the local guard had to
lock the gates because civilians were walking in thinking the vehicles were
for sale!! (I wish!) This is a two edged answer though as something
happened three years ago that hasn't happened before which did set a new
precedence. United Defense Corp traded/bartered some electronic warfare
equipment for approx 900 ea of M998 Humvees, mostly stripped early units.
They were auctioned off in Atlanta and Riverside, Ca. No more are available
from these sources. I know for a fact that AM General had a lot of
heartburn over this and quite possibly this may never happen again and 9/11
hasn't helped either. If WGB is a member of the MVPA, he would know how to
obtain a Humvee through dealers or individuals. Ebay is also a good place
to find one. However there are enough of them out there that they are
rather easily found, but not under $20K.

Now to get on my soapbox for this subject: If you think you're going
to get one for nothing or for a few thousand-FORGET IT or stand in a very
long line!!!!! A rather complete Humvee that won't even run has an
intrinsic value. How about the guy who was wanting a NOS engine and a
transmission for a CUCV?? He said "I want one surplus". TRANSLATION: "I
want one for around $300 or less" (even though no one can get one for $2500)

I picked up my son from a school function and drove my Humvee to pick
him up. One other father came over admiring mine and really wanted one
because he had been told "that you could buy them for $500 if you bought
them in lots of six." Just where do these ideas come from?? Are $50 jeeps
still being sold in the back of magazines?? Also when answering a wanted ad
that finishes with "Must be reasonable", watch out! It's another
translation of "I don't want to pay much for a valuable item". I have
never-ever sold anything to anyone who finished with that clause! They also
usually turn out to be a pain in the butt because they want you to pay
shipping, as well as throw in something else! Ignore those types of ads.
I answered one for a CUCV wanted and as it turned out, someone gave him one
with air conditioning installed and he thought that it set the value of all
CUCV's. When you are looking for something for nothing-NOTHING is what you
usually find! Julian Burke
