i submit that you can make your own power steering 'kit' and perhaps for
less $$$. you will need the column and lower shaft from a multifuel 5
ton, the one with the box up front on the frame. you will also need the
steering pump and a small tank for the fluid. for a box you will need a
saginaw 2 piston unit as found on mid '80's international 1800, 1600
trucks and many others. with the box you need the pitman arm and the
drag link. the link uses the same size ends as the one on the m-35. how
convenient. the pitman arm will have to be bent to be more of a dogleg
and the drag link will have to be shortened and welded. remove the
original box and sell it to some poor sod who is strong enough to not
need power. with a little experimentation you will find that the saginaw
unit will go on the outside of the frame in just about the same place as
the shaft used to come out.
it will help a LOT if you are already a good mechanic and inventor. i
have this system on my cat powered truck and am about to put it on a
work truck. if anyone finds a better choice of boxes.......... please
let me know. i reckon all this can be got for $600-$700 plus your labor.
