         Joe,

         The major difference is the engine power wise and size wise.
M-109A2 uses a LD-427 (Cubic Inch) whereas the M-109A3 uses the LDT-465-1C
or D engine. The 427 just didn't cut it as far as the Army was concerned
reliability wasn't quite up to spec and power needed to be increased.
