Tanks and Tank Mile Road at Aberdeen Proving Ground

I belong to the Museum Foundation here at Aberdeen Proving Ground saw the
thread about the movement of tanks off of what we all new as "Tank Mile Road"
As some of you may know, all of the Museums collection was stored "inside"
building 314 until 1963. This building was converted into the administrative
headquarters of what became "Test and Evaluation Command (TECOM)" and is now
"Development Test Command" plus a few other agencies. The vehicles have
basically deteriorated after 30-40 years outside, goal of Museum is to
basically arrest the damage that has been done to date via some abatement
funds that became available. There have been tours of the "restoration
facility" during each Rally and will be avaialbel again this year. There
is not much time or $ per vehicle but basically they go through a paint
removal, treatment and some limited restoration and then repainted. The
Museum staff would love to put them back inside a building, but not much
space presently exists. Dr. Attwater and staff have been looking at
pre-engineered, bare bones buildings that would basically cover the several
acre outdoor site that is behind the Museum. There is a meeting of the
Ordnance Foundation 19 March at 1700 at the Museum to get an update. This
has been going on for years, Military Construction funds are tough to get.
If anyone nearby wants to attend, they typically last an hour or so, some
light food/softdrink are served. Contact me off list if you want to
attend/or want info on outcome.
Regards,
Tom.....
